On the feasibility of revising current design standards regarding the placement of railway stations on reverse curves in the plan

Abstract
This article examines the prohibition of placing railway stations on reverse curves in existing design standards. Previously applicable station and junction design standards on Russian railways, as well as international and domestic experience in operating railway stations on reverse curves, are analyzed. A comparative analysis of regulatory documentation establishes a cause-and-effect relationship between the presence of inverse curves and deterioration in visibility, and identifies the conditions under which the use of inverse curves was permitted.
A brief overview of modern technical means for compensating for reduced visibility is provided.
A conclusion is reached regarding the advisability of revising current design standards.
